ABORIGINAL FLAGS
|
The Aboriginal Flag and Torres Strait Islander Flag are also known as the flags of the Aboriginal people of Australia, or Indigenous flags of Australia. They were both given formal recognition in 1995, although they were not officially proclaimed as "Flags of Australia" until January 2008. Today Aboriginal flags are proudly displayed and flown by Aboriginal Organisations, Government Departments, Council Offices along with many other associations including primary and secondary schools across Australia.

The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed back in 1971 by Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas, who is descended from the Luritja people of Central Australia. The flag was originally designed for the land rights movement, since then it has become an official flag of Australia and is a significant symbol, not only of the Aboriginal peoples but for all Australians. This official licensed flag features a horizontally divided field of black top and a lower red ochre panel along with a superimposed central yellow sun disc.
