RAAF Ensign - Royal Australian Air Force Flag - RAAF Blue Ensign

The RAAF Ensign is a "light blue Australian Flag" with the union jack in the upper hoist. Below is the seven pointed Commonwealth star with the five stars of the Southern Cross tilted clockwise at 14 degrees within the fly end, along with the RAAF roundel featuring a leaping kangaroo in the lower fly. In 1982, the roundel on the RAAF Ensign was altered to include the red kangaroo in motion. The new design was then approved by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and proclaimed official.

Apart from Australian RAAF bases and the AAFC there is only one other facility within Australia with official permission to fly the RAAF Ensign, The New Lambton Public School, Newcastle NSW. Recognition was granted after the School was used by RAAF and WAAAF in 1942 as a fighter sector headquarters during WWII.

RAN Ensign - Royal Australian Naval Flag - Australian White Ensign

The RAN Ensign is a "White Australian Flag" It bears the Union Jack in the upper hoist, below is a navy blue Commonwealth star. Within the fly end are the five navy blue stars of the Southern Cross constellation, as per the Australian Flag.
In 1966 this new RAN Ensign was proclaimed official by HRH Queen Elizabeth II, and on the 1st March 1967, the official changeover occurred, with all submarines ships & naval establishments hoisting the Royal Australian Navy Ensign that day.

The RAN Ensign or Australian White Ensign is flown at all Australian Naval bases. It is also flown from the position of honour onboard all official Naval vessels from an ensign staff at the ship's stern, or, from a flagpole gaff rigged over the stern  or when alongside or underway at sea. The usual protocol that no flag should be flown higher than the National flag does not apply on board a ship. A flag flown at the stern is always in a superior position to a flag flown elsewhere on a ship.Onboard naval vessels, the Australian National Flag is always flown at the bow. Submarines when surfaced or alongside, fly the RAN Ensign forrad of the sail with  the Australian National Flag flown aft. The flags hoisted upon submarines are of course, lowered and stored before getting underway, naval exercises or diving.
